The state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something. Deep-seated antagonism. The condition of being an enemy.

From Old French enemistié, from popular Latin inimicitas, from inimicus ; meaning "enemy." Composed of Latin in- (not) + amicus (friend), itself from amare (to love). The root of the word that means hate contains the root of the word that means love. First recorded use: 13th century.
AMITY

noun ; Late 15th century

A friendly relationship. Goodwill between nations or peoples. The condition of harmony and mutual understanding.
